What it is:
Our class has been using an online
program called Class Dojo that
promotes positive behavior in the classroom, which correlates with the West
Allis-West Milwaukee School District’s PBIS program. Throughout the day, students are able to earn
points for respecting self, respecting others, respecting the environment,
staying on task, and demonstrating good teamwork during class and during
specials. Similarly, they can lose
points for showing disrespect or off task behavior.
One of the features of this program is
that weekly reports can be emailed directly to parents so that you can see how
your child’s school week went. We are
very excited about this because we believe home-school connections are very
important for a child’s academic and overall success.
How it works:
We document the positive and negative behaviors we observe our
students using, by assigning "points" to students under the following
categories: Respect Self, Respect Others, Respect the Environment, Disrespect
Self, Disrespect Others, and Disrespect the Environment. We also added a
positive and negative report from specials option. So, your child will
earn (or lose) points throughout the day based on his/her actions. To
help you understand examples of what these points can be earned for, we have
created a document with a table outlining examples of behaviors (it can be kept in the Take Home Folder, or wherever you prefer to keep it). Please have discussions with your child about his/her points earned on a daily/weekly basis.
